Legacy is more important than currency

This is the message that I received yesterday directly from Gary Vaynerchuk the most successful entrepreneur of the social media era. This means that when you build a brand based on a strong competence and passion that both belong to you, and you bring them to the Web sharing and capitalizing your ability to attract and retain people, you are bound to success and to leave a standing mark in society, in business and in their own family.

Gary is an extraordinary person who managed to bring his family wine business from $ 3,5 million to $ 50 using mostly social media. He was one of the very first to create a business that revolved around a blog site in the late 90ties and then he brought it to the next level by using video and to leverage the power of his knowledge: he had been testing three new different wines every day for several years before starting his video channel: Wine Library TV.

His message was that the time of big companies like Walmart is going to be over and small retailers will win back the stage by providing excellent customer service, but there is going to be a rush and everybody will have the chance to compete, therefore only the most competent and dedicated will actually win.

Again it is not going to be about the Internet only or a specific tool, it is going to be about who will be more successful in capturing the eyeballs of people and in providing them exactly what you want.

It has been a very refreshing view and I was amazed at how long the Q&A session continued. Gary provides direct and brutally honest replies to everybody and we literally had to be booted off the room because the hotel was closing it up.

A memorable evening at the Wealth Building Annex in Tampa, a mastermind organization governed by Chris Krimitsos that I joined just after arriving in the US 15 months ago and that has proved key in the establishment of my presence and business in the US.

What is your real net working time?

People that work 9 hours a day they usually actually produce for 1 hour and one quarter, the rest is spent in tasks that are supporting the production but not really contributing to it directly, or on other tasks that are simply off target. This is the estimate I picked from Internet Marketing expert and entrepreneur Chris Krimitsos during the latest edition of the Hypefree Internet Marketing bootcamp in Tampa.

His advice is to micro-manage your work basing on what also some major corporations are doing. Times have changed and things move much faster now, so the two years plan of yesterday have now become 9 months plans and they have micro-goals for every single week.

I don’t know if this estimate is accurate for any type of business, but I do see a lot of frantic motion around me here in the US and many people who are simply wasting they business opportunities by grossly mis-managing their time.

It seems like some people get drowned into the day to day routine and the multitude of little actions and lose sight of where they are going and why are they going there in the first place. One major source of distraction is naturally e-mail. We lose a lot of time and focus by answering messages that are plainly a waste of time and we lose sight of the important communications. This would also include naturally the e-mail or messaging components of Web 2.0 platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

The powerful help from the unexpected

Last Saturday I was at a seminar on affiliate marketing and the speaker, Dan Sherman, opened his speech with the following quote by Johann Goethe, the famous German writer: “The moment one commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sort of things occur to help one that would never have otherwise occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would come his way. Whatever you can do or dream you can begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now”.

In a nutshell, the moment you look for an answer, if you are really committed to finding it, life will come to your assistance. I decided I wanted to put it into action and it happened to me twice in the following two days.

The first assistance I got from life was during the very event itself. I had been participating with my whole family: my wife Maria was in the seminar room with me and our two twin kids, Alex and Stefano, were playing quietly outside, in the hotel hall. They are such great kids and they are always willing to help me progress in my work, so I wanted to reward them. They had been looking for a pet and they had picked “parrots” as their choice. So, just before leaving the conference room, I remembered my friend Chris Krimitsos had been dealing with parrots.

Some people complain about the Web violating their privacy and they fear other people will take advantage of their personal information. Well, if you don’t want something to be found by other you should just never put on the Web.

Facebook and other similar sites are not conceived to contain all kind of personal and private information. They exist solely for the purpose of facilitating communication amongst people and reconnect individuals who have lost sight of each other. So think again before you publish some kind of funny information or video about yourself, because no matter how you will protect it, somebody will sooner or later get to it and make it public. What you put on the Internet is going to be there forever and it’s probably going to be copied in multiple places.

What is on the Web is the information that will affect most markedly how people will perceive you. Almost everybody, today, checks your name on Google before doing business with you or simply developing an acquaintance. You need to be there, otherwise other people will publish information about you and you don’t want to be “branded” through the words and actions of others. Yet consider carefully the effect you want to obtain with everything you publish, particularly video which is viewed by many, many people.

Chris Krimitsos gives advice on where to upload your video during a panel at the Hypefree Internet Markerting bootcamp by Dan Stojadinovic in Tampa.

In the video I enclose in this post, Chris Krimitsos, the King of video copy, gives some suggestions on where to place the videos you want to share and how to do it. Facebook has also a video sharing function you can use, but make sure you keep your videos short: Facebook allows up to 20 minutes per video and you should never go past 5 per video. If you really have a long story, break it up in parts. You can also just simply link inside Facebook a video that has been uploaded to Youtube, even automaticcaly. Just make sure it is the right video :)

Get it while it’s hot!

That’s the key advice I got from the King of video copy, Chris Krimitsos, during the recent Hypefree Internet marketing bootcamp in Tampa. Content is a driving force for any Internet activity and video is by far the most effective way to attract attention and to generate traffic. How do you produce an attractive video? Don’t script it, take the footage from curious situations in real life as they come to you “the moment they come to you”.

If you are slow on the draw you’ll never really have good footage. This means that you should be packing a portable camcorder with you all the time. Some people prefer the Flip camera, it is fairly inexpensive and very easy to use. The King suggests to use a Sony HD camera. Whatever you use, the trick is to be alert to the moment and capture it as soon as it happens. People love freshness and reality and you should aim at shooting it right the first time with no editing.

If you get into this frame of mind you will create some very engaging content that will sound live and direct. The ability to capture it right the first time will also allow you to record events that would not repeat themselves, as they happen and where they happen.

You can create the situation by involving others and the perfect time to create footage is during events, where you meet very different characters and they are all more willing to participate. In this blog I am showing you a short video of Chris and several other attendees with Halloween costumes at the bootcamp in Tampa. This is an example of getting it while it is hot!
