Create your own elbowroom

Yesterday I began a twenty days series of posts dedicated to the twenty golden rules on how to gain money, based on the works of PT Barnum and his book “The Art of Money Getting”. The first rule we saw yesterday was. “Don’t mistake your vocation”, not we come to the second that is “Select the Right Location”.

You can be very good at your trade and you can perform it with passion, but you won’t very far if you don’t have a public available or if you have too much competition doing the same as you do. The Web offers new ground and elbowroom for growing any business, but you must also realize that the entry barrier is very low. Anybody who can put a ridiculous amount of time in developing his skills in Internet marketing or affiliate marketing can beat you so finding a very selected niche is often one way around the problem, but that reduces also the number of people you can serve.

I was listening live to a presentation by Gary Vaynechuck one week ago, one of the most popular businessmen on the Web, and he told the story of a liquor store run by his father. The location was not optimum and particularly the trading of liquor was a very competitive market.

He decided to move to wine, and particularly Australian and Spanish wines to begin with, so to be different from his competitors, and he started promoting the shop online by becoming one of the first businessmen to ever use the Web professionally.

Then he used video as a preferred channel of promotion after having used all other marketing channels and tools available, both online and off line. As he puts it, the important things is to be able to capture the eyeballs of people and therefore you must bring your business where a good number of eyeballs are going to be.

Then you must be prepared to work hard in establishing your leadership because you will soon have many competitors when they will see you are having success with what you do and therefore you need to keep yourself ahead of the pack.

My persona experience in this has shown me that North America is still a country that offers many more opportunities than old Europe. That’s why I have decided to move here instead of remaining in my country, going through all the the hoops connected with the Visa and learning how to do business in a different culture and nation.

Removing myself from Europe has multiplied my chances, several people are already following my example and are coming over here from Italy imitating what I do. Now I will have to use the advantage of being here to better refine my business model and activity and gain further momentum.

With the Web you can be anywhere, but you will have to work harder to keep your position.
