Financial newspapers and TV have long been the main channel to keep informed about what was going on in the business world. The Web has now replaced paper as a main source of reference both because most of the papers have gone online and because you find many more resources, closer to your particular niche and market, and they contain often articles or comments written by experts in the field or by people that are actually familiar with what they write about. Blog are ranking high now as a source of information on specific subjects.
In his “The Art of Money Getting” P.T. Barnum lists as rule number 12 “Read the Newspapers” but today he would have said read the most important blogs in your area. In doing so not only you can get valuable information for your business of for your passion, but you can also get ideas on you to structure your own blog.
Where can you find them? On Technorati.com the directory of the top blogs in any industry. You chose the subject or field and then you browse the list of blogs available, starting from the top. Some of them are actual magazines, written by several people, each contributing with her own knowledge and expertise.
It is the best way to keep yourself up to date. Let us make an example: the news has been around now for a few weeks that FHA (the Federal Housing Administration) is going to waive the 90 days seasoning rule for investment-type of houses in the next 12 months. This means that an investor like me who buy houses from banks or from home owners, now can fix them and resell them to an retail buyer without having to wait 90 days after the original purchase.
It can make quite a change in the business of many investors, but when I read the main blogs on real estate I find that banks will not follow the change probably and will still not lend to a buyer if the 90 days have not passed.
Therefore I know that I cannot count on this new FHA rule and I need to base my business on the same principles that I followed in 2009. This is important strategy information, the lack of which could seriously affect my planning.
By looking at the Technorati directory you can also see at a glance which subjects are most popular. The subject of “living” is king with 15,980 blogs listed. Entertainment comes second with 11,422 blogs. Third comes Technology (9,498) and then Business (8,797). Politics is on the fifth position (8,509). In the business arena we have just three major subsections: small business (2,069) and then finance (944) and finally real estate (447).
They are a lot to browse but you can take only the first 10 or 20, using the order given by Technorati and study them, find what you like and dislike about them. Learn information and tips, and then use them for your own business and for improving your own blog. There is really a wealth of information, don’t waste it.
